Gingival Contouring
Why Gingival (Gum) Contouring?
Because bespoke smile design considers more than just your teeth.
Your gums act as a framework for your smile. When your gums are unsymmetrical, misshapen, too bulky or cover too much of your teeth, you may feel that they are detracting from your smile. A gingivectomy, also known as gum reshaping or recontouring, is a cosmetic procedure that is used to address concerns about the shape or appearance of a patient’s gums. If you are uncomfortable smiling or laughing or, if you feel you have a “gummy” smile, you may wish to consider gum recontouring with our dentist in Calgary, Dr. Dirk Thompson.

What To Know About Gingival Contouring With Our Calgary Dentist.
How is gingival contouring done?
Your gingival contouring appointment will begin with our Calgary dentist, Dr. Dirk Thompson, anaesthetizing the areas of your gums that concern you with a local anaesthetic. Our Calgary dentist will then use a scalpel blade to reduce, debulk and/or reshape the gums to achieve an aesthetically pleasing and harmonized result. Generally, gum recontouring does not require any sutures (stitches).
What can I expect after a gingival contouring procedure?
After a gingival contouring procedure by our Calgary dentist, most patients only experience mild discomfort which can be managed by an over-the-counter pain medication. Depending upon the extent of the gum surgery, most patients return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure.
How long does gingival contouring take?
Gingival contouring at our Calgary dentist office can usually be completed in one visit. If extensive gum reduction is involved, a second visit may be required. If your aesthetic goals cannot be accomplished with gum recontouring, you may be referred by our Calgary dentist to a periodontist (gum specialist) for a procedure known as crown lengthening.
If have any questions about gum recontouring, call our Calgary dentist to schedule a consultation appointment.
